Joel and I went over yonder to Nashville about a month ago to go to the temple. It was a fun two day trip. We also visited some Civil War sites, ate some good Mexican food and found me some cute rain boots. We had waited along time to do all of these things.
Touring Civil War sites has always been something I have wanted to do. As I love learning about history and being able to actually visit those places and events I have learned about was cool. Although I can't say I remember really learning about the Battle of Franklin. So we went to two different sites the Carnton Plantation and the Battle field of the Battle of Franklin which is downtown Franklin Tennessee.
WAR * FAMILY * SACRIFICE
During the Battle of Franklin the Carnton family turned their home into a Civil War Field Hospital. The Carnton family sheltered hundreds of wounded and dying Confederate soldiers brought to the site for surgeries and medical care.
This is the front of the home.
The Carnton's turned part of their family cemetery into a Confederate Cemetery. It is the final resting place for 1,481 men killed during the battle.
The backside of the home that faces the North.
The Battle Of Franklin took place on November 30, 1864. This battle was pretty much hand to hand combat which was centered around the Carter house. The combat raged for five hours, leaving nearly 9,500 casualties, 2,000 dead, 6,500 wounded and 1,000 missing. The battle cost the lives of six confederate generals and eleven Union Soldiers were later awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. This is one of the bloodiest battles ever fought on American soil. More men died in one hour of this battle then any of the other civil war battle. The fighting started a few hours before sundown and most were killed in the first hour.
Im standing where a big portion of the battle took place.
This picture shows bullet holes on a building by the Carter House. You could still see the lead stuck inside the wood and brick, It was pretty amazing.
Our friends that used to live over in the Franklin told us of a great little Mexican restaurant to eat at. We have been dying to have good Mexican food as it is hard to find out this direction. It didn't disappoint at all. Joel and I ate so much because we weren't sure when we will get some more good food. We were in pain that night. But it was worth it. Next time we go to the temple in Nashville we will be making a stop there again for sure.
